About this session

This session is different from our usual sessions and has been developed in a response to those parents who want a more in depth, interactive and personal training experience.

Interaction with the presenter is built into and throughout the session and will centre around these themes:

  • adaption adaption and flexibility at home
  • parenting challenges and how to manage it
  • behaviour management – rewards and consequences
  • appropriate educational support and how to access, for example, EHCP applications
  • the future

Numbers are limited to just 10 participants giving more time for interaction and a longer question and answer at the end so please allow approximately two hours for the session. It will build on knowledge gained if you have attended our other PDA related sessions, but previous attendance is not necessary.

By the end of the session, you will understand the profile of PDA and effective and positive strategies to try within the home environment.

Background to PDA

Pathological Demand Avoidance is a behaviour profile within Autism. The profile is significantly different to those who are simply diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum.

Parents want and need to understand these differences in order to better support young people with PDA. It is a challenging and testing time for parents and this session aims to provide a more comprehensive foundation of support for participants and help them better understand PDA and strategies that can be used to support their children more effectively. As a result of this training, you will be empowered to become more responsive and effective in your support.

If you think this session could be useful, you may wish to consider these questions:

Do you have an Autistic young person who has difficulties coping with incredibly high anxiety levels?

Is your young person driven by a need to be in complete control at all times?

Is their behaviour extreme and frequently challenging to deal with?

Is everyday different and there just aren’t any strategies that consistently work?

Useful for:

  • Parents with a young person diagnosed with PDA or suspected PDA

Suitable for:

  • Parents and carers or the wider, extended family members

Also included:

  • Summary sheet of Key Points
  • Certificate of Attendance
